Are there online (video call) kora lessons?
Yes, it's entirely possible to learn the kora through videos and video conferencing. I'll also be organizing workshops for small groups soon.
What does a typical lesson look like?
Generally, the student shows me the work they've done on their own (using videos I give them) or with me, or asks questions, and I correct things or add new elements. It usually lasts an hour.
Who did you learn the kora from?
I first learned the kora with a Senegalese teacher in Belgium (Sadio Cissokho, Bao's brother), then spent a year learning daily with Dialymady Sissoko (Ballaké Sissoko's brother) in Mali. I was mentored by Toumani Diabaté during his visits to Belgium. I later studied music with various teachers in Indian classical music.
Do you need to know music theory to learn the kora?
No, I myself dove into music with no prior knowledge. I make sure to teach for all levels. If you've never played music before, that's not a problem at all.
How much does a lesson cost?
My lesson prices decrease based on the number of lessons booked — you can find them here.
How long does it take to learn the kora well?
That's a hard question to answer, since I'm also learning something new every day myself. However, with regular practice, after a year you're already starting to be able to have fun with it.

Can someone who isn't a griot/griotte learn (or teach) the kora?
Yes — in fact, I received the traditional blessing from Toumani Diabaté when I arrived in Mali, and he has always encouraged me.
